As the world marks International Human Rights Day and the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence comes to a close, Media & Teens Network is sounding the alarm on the escalating insecurity and human rights abuses in Nigeria.

The organisation is calling on the Federal Government to take decisive and transparent action to address the unending cycle of violence, 16-day activism campaign to end gender-based violence, and the organisation is demanding urgent action to protect the lives and dignity of Nigerian citizens.

The recent abduction of over 50 students from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, and the seizure of 315 schoolchildren from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papri community, Niger State, have sparked widespread outrage and concern.

While 100 of the kidnapped Papri children were released, the fate of 165 others, including staff, remains unknown.

In contrast, the Nigerian military’s swift and decisive action in responding to an attempted coup in Benin Republic has raised questions about the government’s priorities and commitment to protecting its citizens.

The organisation’s Executive Director, Lillian Okenwa, questioned the disparity in response, asking why the government cannot deploy the same level of force and coordination to rescue Nigerian children and protect its citizens.

The situation is further complicated by the killing of seven women protesters in Adamawa State, who were demanding answers about the disappearance of their loved ones.
