Nigeria is actively working to strengthen its bilateral relations with the United States, according to Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar.
This initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s foreign policy agenda.
The announcement was made at the 248th U.S. Independence Anniversary dinner hosted by the U.S. Embassy in Abuja on Tuesday.
Represented by the Director of Regions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Janet Olisa, Tuggar highlighted the importance of the Nigeria-U.S. Binational Cooperation agreement as a cornerstone of this effort.
Tuggar emphasized that the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the U.S. had been marked by various forms of cooperation.
He noted that the recent visit by the U.S. Secretary of State and the Deputy Secretary of State to Nigeria underscored the significance of these bilateral ties.
“We have been two nations that have continued to watch our friendship, our bond, and cooperation very tightly,” Tuggar stated.
“The Nigeria-U.S. Binational Cooperation agreement is a testament to how important and cordial our relationship is.”
The minister also outlined future plans to deepen cooperation in security and health sectors, expressing gratitude for the U.S.’s support in these areas.
“We are looking at strengthening the security bond between us, and we are thankful for all the security cooperation that we receive,” he said.
He also acknowledged the U.S.’s interventions in Nigeria’s health sector, particularly in AIDS programs.
Ambassador Richard Mills, the newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, reaffirmed the strong ties between the two countries, noting their shared commitment to democracy and freedom.
He expressed his enthusiasm for working to further enhance these relations.
Ambassador David Greene, Deputy Head of Mission and Charge d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy, highlighted the significant people-to-people ties between the nations, with 700,000 Nigerians living and working in the U.S.
He described the bilateral relationship as one that is rapidly progressing to ensure greater security, health, and prosperity for both nations.
