• Calls for adherence to transitional programme

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep concerns over yet another unconstitutional change of government in the Republic of Burkina Faso, which ousted the military government of Paul – Henri Damiba on 30th September, 2022.

In a statement, spokesperson of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Francisca K. Omayuli, said this development was unfortunate and worrisome, as it further served to destabilize the country and undermine efforts geared towards the restoration of constitutional order.

Omayuli added that despite the setback, the Government of Nigeria underscored the imperative for the Burkinabe military leadership to adhere to the transitional programme put in place for the restoration of constitutional rule and return of the country to civil governance and democratic rule on 1st July, 2024.

Omayuli said the Federal Government of Nigeria would unequlvocally oppose any act to truncate or extend the transition programme beyond the already established timeline for the return of power to a democratically-elected government.

She said Nigeria fully supported the ECOWAS and African Union (AU) position, calling on the military leadership to adhere to the Transitional Charter.
