NGE set for 4th Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture in Lagos July 23

● Fayemi to chair, LASU Prof Akhaine to speak on “Media, INEC, Voters and Path to Credible Elections”

The Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE, will host the 4th edition of the Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture on Wednesday, July 23, 2026, at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos.

The annual lecture series was instituted by the Guild in 2023 to honour the legacy of Alhaji Lateef Jakande — iconic journalist, former NGE President, former Governor of Lagos State, and former Minister of Works.

This year’s theme is “The Media, INEC, Voters and Path to Credible Elections.”

Professor Sylvester Odion Akhaine of the Department of Political Science, Lagos State University, will deliver the keynote lecture.
Former Governor of Ekiti State and ex-Minister, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, will chair the event. Time is 11:00am.

According to a statement signed by NGE President, Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, the lecture will draw top government officials, media leaders and civil society actors.

Expected guests include:
– Chief Host: Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu
– Special Guest of Honour: Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris
– Guild Elders: Chief Segun Osoba, former Ogun State Governor, and Uncle Sam Amuka, publisher of Vanguard Newspapers
– Managing Directors and Editors of print, broadcast and online media
– Civil society leaders

In line with Jakande’s commitment to mentoring, the Guild said Mass Communication and Journalism students from Caleb University, Lagos State University, Yaba College of Technology, and the Nigerian Institute of Journalism have also been invited.

“University students are invited every year to learn the value of service, excellence and dedication to journalism and public service, and to connect with practising journalists who could serve as their role models,” the statement said.

The Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture was launched in 2023 to keep alive the ideals of service, integrity and nation-building that defined Jakande’s career in both journalism and government.

– 2023: Delivered by Chief Felix Adenaike, Fellow of the NGE
– 2024: Prince Nduka Obaigbena, Chairman of THISDAY and ARISE News, spoke on _“Rapid Changing Media Landscape: Survival Strategies”_
– 2025: Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, delivered “Journalism and the Challenge of Nation-Building in a Multi-Ethnic Society”

The Guild described the lecture as “a fitting tribute to Alhaji Jakande’s legacy” and “a platform for thought leadership, policy debate, and national introspection.”
