In an effort to catalyze sustainable and transformative change towards disability inclusion and to successfully execute the United Nations Disability Inclusion Strategy, the UN in Nigeria Disability Inclusion Technical Working Group, with invaluable support from the UN Country Team (UNCT), took the initiative to organize an Open-Door Forum Meeting specifically designed for Persons Living with Disabilities.
During this significant gathering, the discussions were focused on shedding light upon and identifying the various challenges and difficulties faced by Persons Living with Disabilities.
The overarching aim was to raise awareness, foster empathy, and generate proactive solutions that promote increased inclusion and provide greater opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
The forum served as a platform for meaningful engagement, allowing participants to share their personal experiences, express their concerns, and contribute their perspectives towards the common goal of advancing disability inclusion.
The collective voices of the individuals with disabilities present in the forum were acknowledged and respected, aligning with the essential principle of “Nothing about us without Us.”
This principle emphasizes the importance of involving and consulting persons with disabilities in decision-making processes that directly affect their lives, ensuring their agency and autonomy.
The forum explored the essential steps and measures required to make persons with disabilities fully integrated and active participants in the programs and activities of the UN in Nigeria.
