An engine issue caused a plane that left Newark Liberty International Airport Tuesday afternoon to turn around and make an emergency landing, officials said.

The Israel Airlines flight was diverted to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and landed safely around 3 p.m., according to the FAA.

The Boeing 787 took off from Newark at 1:25 p.m. and was en route to Ben Gurion International Airport in Israel, authorities said.

No other information was immediately available. Multiple spokespeople for the Port Authority did not respond to messages seeking comment from NJ Advance Media.
