NDU Inducts 14 Building Graduates into NIOB

The Department of Building, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Niger Delta University (NDU), Bayelsa State, on Thursday inducted 14 of its second set of graduates into the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB).

The induction ceremony, held at the university’s main campus in Wilberforce Island, was themed “Constructing Intelligence: Shaping Sustainable Futures with Technology.”

In his address, the Head of Department, Dr. Christopher Belonwu, described the event as a day of fulfilment and profound joy for the institution.

Belonwu said the university remained committed to producing competent, ethical, and industry-ready building professionals who would contribute to national development and global best practices in the built environment.

“As head of department, witnessing the induction of our graduates into the graduate cadre of the Nigerian Institute of Building gives me joy. The Department of Building was officially kicked off in the 2019/2020 academic session with a clear vision.”

He acknowledged that the journey had its challenges, starting with modest facilities, but noted that the second induction ceremony validated the department’s vision through the hard work of students, lecturers, and university management.

Belonwu urged the new inductees to uphold the highest standards of the profession, practise with integrity, and continuously develop their knowledge and skills.

He described the induction not as the end of their journey but the beginning of a new era, while commending their parents and guardians for their sacrifices.

The Vice Chancellor of NDU, Prof. Allen Agih, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Tombra Kingdom, congratulated the inductees and charged them to be good ambassadors of the institution.

Prof. Agih urged them to maintain good behaviour and avoid any act that could tarnish the university’s image.

The Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Prof. Sylvester Ebigbagha, said it was gratifying that 14 students from the second set had been found worthy in character and learning to be inducted into NIOB.

In his remarks, the President of NIOB, Abimbola Kolade, represented by Mr. Ahmed Baba Ahmed, former Chairman of NIOB Bayelsa Chapter, commended NDU for the quality of training given to the students.

Kolade encouraged the inductees to excel in the building profession through innovation, research, and continuous upskilling, while maintaining good character and respect for professional colleagues.

One of the inductees, Mr. Michael Effiong, thanked NIOB for finding them worthy of induction and pledged that they would uphold good behaviour at all times.
