The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has commended Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani for driving initiatives that equip Nigerian girls with digital skills, as 185 female students toured the National Communications Museum in Abuja on Friday.
The praise came via the Commission’s official social media channels during activities marking the 2026 National Girls in ICT Programme, an annual Federal Government push to close the gender gap in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, STEM.
As part of the programme, the NCC hosted the students for an educational tour of the museum. The Commission said the excursion gave the girls “firsthand knowledge of the evolution of communication technologies in Nigeria,” from early telegraph and dial-up systems to modern broadband and 5G networks.
“The initiative is designed to inspire young girls to become active contributors to Nigeria’s digital transformation by pursuing careers and innovations in ICT and other technology-driven sectors,” the NCC stated. It added that exposure to the nation’s telecom heritage would “stimulate interest in digital innovation” and encourage participation in the digital economy.
The National Girls in ICT Programme is part of broader efforts by the Federal Government and industry stakeholders to boost female participation in technology, promote digital inclusion, and create pathways for young women to thrive in tech roles.
Industry observers described the museum tour and Tijani’s wider digital skills push as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future workforce. “Nurturing the next generation of female technology leaders is key to expanding our digital ecosystem,” one analyst noted.
The Federal Government has set ambitious targets to achieve 95% digital literacy by 2030, with gender parity as a core component.
