The National Broadcasting Commission has warned broadcasters nationwide to expect stricter sanctions as violations of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code rise, especially in news, current affairs and political programmes.
In a statement issued Thursday, April 17, 2026, the Commission said it has recorded a sustained increase in breaches of the 6th Edition of the Code, raising concerns about falling professional standards.
The NBC said many stations are drifting from their core duty to provide accurate, balanced and professional information to the public.

With the 2027 general elections approaching, the regulator said it will adopt a zero-tolerance stance on non-compliance.
All broadcasters must adhere strictly to provisions on fairness, accuracy, balance, hate speech, incitement, and respect for constitutional institutions, the Commission said.

It flagged what it called a “crisis of anchor and presenter professionalism,” noting a clear departure from ethical standards in broadcast journalism.

Some presenters, the NBC said, now inject personal opinions into programmes instead of maintaining neutrality.
The Commission did not name offending stations but said enforcement will be stricter going forward.
