The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Bayelsa State Chapter, has demanded the immediate promotion of women journalists into leadership positions to shape media narratives and drive lasting change.
The demand is contained in a communique issued at the end of a two-day International Women’s Day 2026 commemoration, which featured a road walk and a high-level symposium.
The symposium, held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Press Centre on Azikoro Road, Ekeki, Yenagoa, had the theme “Give to Gain: Empowering Women Journalists for Impact.”
In its resolutions, NAWOJ declared that placing women in leadership roles is crucial for balanced storytelling and industry transformation.
The association also expressed appreciation to media owners and employers for providing platforms for women journalists to practise and earn a decent living.
NAWOJ reaffirmed its commitment to partner with individuals and organisations that empower women in journalism, while highlighting the unique challenges women face, including workplace bias, deprivation, abuse and safety concerns.
The group further resolved to intensify the push for gender equality in the media, urging women journalists to pursue professional training, develop multimedia skills, embrace technology and innovation, and engage in networking and mentorship.
Other resolutions include sustained awareness campaigns on the plight of women journalists, promotion of solidarity among them, and greater attention to mental health and stress management.
NAWOJ Bayelsa pledged to continue working relentlessly to ensure women journalists thrive and occupy leadership positions across the state’s media landscape.
