After a week of standoff, striking workers of the National Assembly under the aegis of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) have suspended their action.

The suspension has paved the way for the seamless resumption of plenaries by both chambers of the National Assembly after their long break that afforded them opportunity to participate in their parties’ respective primary elections.

Chairman of the Association Sunday Sabiyi announced the suspension of the strike on Tuesday while addressing the striking workers at the entrance of the National Assembly.

Sabiyi said that the strike was being suspended on the basis of some agreements reached with the leadership of the Senate.

The workers, however, threatened to resume the strike, if the agreements were not honoured by the end of July.

Members of PASAN had embarked on an indefinite strike to protest the non-implementation of certain conditions of service.

The association had in 2020 written to the Senate President Ahmed Lawan and Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila to intimate them with their grievances.

The National Assembly leadership could not resolve the contending issues.

Last Friday, Lawan had urged the striking workers to call off the strike during a meeting between the association and the leadership of the political of the National Assembly.

He noted that rather than continue with the industrial action, dialogue should be considered as a means of resolving differences.

“I want to urge you, whenever we disagree, let’s try to come and sit and talk about it because when we talk, we are able to find some common grounds and solutions. I am very happy that we have been able to deal with this,” he had said.

The Senate President had assured the striking workers that their grievances would be addressed.
