Nigeria’s political space is steadily heating up as early permutations ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to take firmer shape, with the National Assembly emerging as a central arena of strategic calculation. What is playing out is not just routine pre-election alignment, but a deliberate and high-stakes effort to influence the structure, leadership, and stability of the next legislature.

The National Assembly has postponed its plenary resumption initially scheduled for today, September 23, 2025, to October 7, 2025.

The postponement was announced in a statement signed by Kamoru Ogunlana, Clerk to the National Assembly, on September 22, 2025.

According to the statement, committee activities would continue despite the postponement of plenary activities.

Members of the National Assembly and the public have been informed of the new date and requested to adjust their schedules accordingly.

The reason for the postponement was not specified, but the notice expressed regret for any inconvenience the short notice might cause.

The development means that legislative activities in both chambers of the National Assembly will remain on hold until October 7, 2025.

This decision comes after the lawmakers had earlier adjourned for their annual holiday, which commenced on July 24, 2025.
