Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), on Saturday, inaugurated its first phase of Tricycle Shuttle Service to boost transportation system within Maimalari Military Cantonment in Maiduguri.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the inauguration was performed by the Chairperson of NAOWA, 7 Division chapter, Borno, Mrs Abdulsalam Abubakar.
Abubakar said she had noticed the difficulties being faced by families moving from their different locations within the cantonment to the main gate since her assumption of office.
“I observed that one of the challenges faced by the families of our soldiers, particularly women and children within the cantonment, was movement from the residential quarters to the cantonment gate,” she said.
Abubakar expressed concern over the experiences of women and children with inadequate space for the goods purchased in the market and rampant crashes, especially during the rainy season.
She noted that the new transport innovation had become necessary in order to seek for a better, safer and cheaper alternative mode of transportation within the cantonment.
Abubakar said that the intervention was in line with the visionary and sterling leadership of the NAOWA President, Mrs Salamatu Yahaya.
“I considered it wise and a matter of utmost importance to procure three units of tricycles, popularly called Keke NAPEP, to ferry them at cheaper rate.
“This is with the ultimate aim of alleviating the suffering of women and children in particular and the entire cantonment community in general,” she said.
Abubakar said that the provision of the tricycles was just the first phase of the elaborate planned improvement in the cantonment transportation system.
“Other phases will follow alongside plans to further improve the working conditions of the families and create an enabling teaching and learning environment for teachers and pupils in NAOWA Nursery and Primary School in the cantonment,” she said.
Highlights of the event were the unveiling and presentation of the tricycles to the operators and the maiden ride by Abubakar.
NAN reports that Abubakar was accompanied by the GOC, 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen A. E. Abubakar, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the event.(NAN)
