The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to both the Federal Government and the Plateau State Government following the abduction of a student of the University of Jos, John Arum, while he was reportedly travelling to Kaduna.

In a statement released on Tuesday and signed by NANS President Olushola Oladoja, the group condemned the incident in strong terms, describing it as another painful example of rising insecurity affecting students across the country.

According to the association, Arum was kidnapped on his way to Kaduna, and distressing visuals allegedly showing him in captivity have already surfaced online. The group claimed the footage indicates severe mistreatment and pressure from the abductors, who are also demanding a ransom of ₦30 million for his release.

NANS expressed concern over what it called the slow response of authorities, warning that continued delays could worsen public anger and erode trust in security institutions. It stressed that urgent action is needed to secure the student’s safe return.

The association also called for immediate deployment of intelligence and security resources, as well as consistent updates on efforts to rescue the victim. It further urged the government to take broader, more decisive steps to address the growing wave of kidnappings in the country.

Warning of possible escalation, NANS stated that failure to act within the 48-hour window could trigger nationwide protests and disruption of academic and socio-economic activities.
