Justice Maryanne Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Maitama, Abuja, has issued a public summons for Yahaya Adoza Bello, former Governor of Kogi State, for his failure to appear for a fresh arraignment on a 16-count charge brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Bello, along with Shuabu Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, faces charges of criminal breach of trust and conspiracy to commit fraud, totaling N110.4 billion.

The court’s decision came on October 3, 2024, after EFCC counsel Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, filed an ex parte application requesting the court’s permission to serve the charges via substituted means.

The application followed Bello’s absence in court to answer the charges filed against him on September 24, 2024.

Justice Anenih granted the EFCC’s request, ordering that the charges be served at Bello’s last known residence, located at No. 4 Benghazi Street, Maitama, Abuja, through a public summons to be published in widely circulated national newspapers and posted on the court premises.

The court set two adjournment dates: October 24, 2024, for Bello’s arraignment, during which the EFCC is expected to arrest and present him in court, and November 14, 2024, when the 30-day service period will elapse.

In addition to this case, Bello is also awaiting arraignment before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on an 18-count charge of money laundering amounting to N80.2 billion.
