“Lawyers criticising Supreme Court judgement on Lawan’s case will face sanction.” – NBA President
Mr Yakubu Maikyau, I hope you are aware that Supreme Court judges are mere mortals and, therefore, not infallible. Only God does not make mistakes, but reading from the likes of you, one begins to wonder if God made some mistakes.
The way you sound, you will soon sanction lawyers for contrary arguments in law courts. I googled your name Maikyau, and it is translated as “something good, decent.” Please let your name reflect in your utterances, unless you’re in a hurry to become a despot.
If not a reflection of one with despotic tendencies or one whose conscience has been bought, how can any right thinking person think of sanctioning another for speaking up against a skewed judgement. Where is it acceptable that a man who came fourth in a contest suddenly comes first based on unquestioned figures? Where is it acceptable that a man who did not contest in election primaries is cleared to contest in an election? The Supreme Court, which is at the apex, is supposed to correct such anomalies when they occur at lower Courts.
It is absurd that we are expected to keep quiet in the face of falsehood. What happened to freedom of speech? Is it not better we reverted to tradition. Our Benin traditional method, Ogueka, for instance, is used to resolve issues and is far better than these so-called learned men at the Supreme Court?
These judges should remember that they are human beings, and their wig and gown are fabrics sewn by tailors. We look up to God, the Supreme Judge, who will judge us all.
I will leave us to ruminate over these quotes:
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” And,
Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
“All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.” – Edwin Burke.*l
“There’s no greater tyranny than that which is perpetrated under the shield of the law and in the name of justice.”- Montesquieu.
