Governor Zulum made an impromptu visit to Maiduguri Monday Market on Sunday to assess the progress of the ongoing reconstruction efforts.
The market, a bustling hub of trade and commerce, was devastated by a massive fire on February 26, 2023, resulting in the destruction of valuable properties worth billions of Naira.
In response to the disaster, Governor Zulum took swift action by releasing N2 billion to a committee he established.
Out of this amount, one billion was allocated as palliative for the victims, while the remaining funds were dedicated to the reconstruction project.
Additionally, generous donations from prominent citizens and friends of Borno State were channeled into a special account under the governor’s supervision.
Governor Zulum has been personally overseeing the reconstruction work and has visited the site several times to ensure its progress.
During his most recent visit over the weekend, he emphasized the urgent need to complete the project as quickly as possible.
The governor acknowledged the economic hardships faced by traders and residents who heavily rely on the market for their daily needs.
He highlighted that the timely completion of the reconstruction would not only restore economic activities but also uplift the spirits of the residents.
Furthermore, Governor Zulum directed the high-powered committee responsible for the reconstruction to adhere strictly to the original master plan of the market.
He emphasized that compliance with the master plan was crucial to prevent or mitigate any future fire disasters.
Expressing satisfaction with the ongoing reconstruction work, Governor Zulum conveyed his confidence in its speedy completion.
He assured traders and residents that the reconstructed market would feature improved facilities to create a vibrant economic environment once it is finished.
