A Nigerian man has made history as the first Nigerian to take command of a United States’ Navy guided missile destroyer, USS HALSEY (DDG-97).

The man is identified as Commander Kelechi Ndukwe.

He is a Nigerian-American Navy Officer who is based in the United States of America.

Commander Kelechi Ndukwe is to take command of a United States’ Navy guided missile destroyer starting from Friday, 2nd April, 2021.

According to reports, Commander Kelechi Ndukwe is a Surface Warfare Navy Officer who has served on many warships in the United States.

He has also been deployed on several occasions in the Mediterranean sea, Arabic Gulf, Horn of Africa, South America and the Western Pacific Ocean.

Commander Ndukwe has also served in the Navy Office of Legislative Affairs where he represented the Navy as a Congressional Liaison Officer on Capitol Hill.

On his academic qualification, Commander Kelechi Ndukwe acquired a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame Navy ROTC scholarship and a Master’s degree in National Security and Strategy from the U.S. Naval War College.

His ground-breaking achievement has earned him a lot of congratulatory notes from Nigerians and well wishers. (Opera News)
