A devastating flood has swept through Mokwa town, the administrative centre of Mokwa Local Government Area in Niger State.
The flood reportedly claimed numerous lives and caused widespread destruction.
Though official figures had yet to be confirmed as of press time, local residents feared that up to 50 people might have perished in the disaster, which was triggered by incessant downpour on Wednesday night.
The heavy rains lasted several hours, submerging homes and sweeping away sleeping residents, including women and children.
Many remain unaccounted for, raising concerns that the death toll could rise further.
Mohammed Usman, a resident of the affected area, reported that several bodies had already been recovered, but entire households are still missing in parts of the town where homes were completely submerged.
In addition to the loss of life, the flood has severely damaged infrastructure. The major road connecting northern and southern Nigeria through Mokwa has been cut off, complicating rescue efforts and isolating communities.
Property worth millions of naira have been destroyed, with many residents losing everything they owned. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as the waters rose swiftly, leaving little time for evacuation.
Dr. Ibrahim Audu Hussaini, Director of Information and Special Duties at the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), confirmed the incident.
He stated that the agency is currently assessing the extent of the damage and will release a comprehensive report once investigations are complete.
Emergency services are on the ground, and efforts are ongoing to locate missing persons and provide relief to affected families.
