Ralf Rangnick has kicked off his Manchester United tenure with a 1-0 win against Crystal Palace at the Old Trafford on Sunday thanks to a second half goal from Fred.
The new United coach fielded the same line-up that featured in the Red Devils’ 3-2 Premier League victory over Arsenal on Thursday and the hosts dominated in the first half, as they registered a whopping 13 shots.
However, Rangnick’s side lacked that finishing touch as Fred, Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot all missed fine chances to put the hosts ahead before the interval.
Manchester United pushed forward for an opener in the second half, but couldn’t find a way to break down Crystal Palace’s defence as they looked toothless in attack, with Patrick Vieira’s men slowing down the tempo.
An Alex Telles freekick hit the crossbar and the visitors grew into the game, with Jordan Ayew missing a huge chance to give Palace the lead as his strike went just wide of David De Gea’s goal.
Ayew’s missed chance served as a wake-up call for United, who managed to break the deadlock in the 77th minute, when Mason Greenwood set up Fred, who netted his second goal in 16 games this season.
