Man, 49, docked for alleged N1.8m fraud

A 49-year-old man, James Okon, was on Monday brought before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly obtaining N1.8 million under the pretext of investing same in farming.

Okon, whose house address was not given, is being tried on a two-count charge of obtaining money by false pretence and stealing.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Insp. Reuben Solomon, told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offences between 2019 and December 2020 at Lawanson Road, Itire, Surulere, Lagos.

Solomon said the defendant fraudulently obtained N1.8 million from the complainant, one John Amauzi, under the pretext of investing the money in farming and remitting the proceeds to him.

He said the defendant allegedly got the complainant to transfer N1.8 million to him and converted the money to his personal use.

The offences, he said the offences contravened sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The magistrate, Mrs Sanusi Adagun, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N500,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

She ordered that one of the sureties must be a blood relation.

She adjourned the case until March 13 for substantive trial.
