Abia APC chieftain Sen. Nkechi Nwaogu, known as “Mama APC,” has left the party and joined the National Democratic Congress.
Nwaogu confirmed on Thursday that she resigned from the APC and is now a member of the NDC. She blamed her decision on what she called “shenanigans” during the party’s recent primaries in Abia State.
The former Pro-Chancellor of the University of Calabar participated in the NDC primaries for Abia Central Senatorial District on Thursday. She is contesting the ticket against Emeka Nwankpa and three other aspirants.
Nwaogu said she was optimistic about securing the NDC ticket after the primaries. The former House of Representatives member had also contested the Abia Central seat in the APC primaries earlier this month.
Her defection removes a high-profile figure from the APC in Abia Central ahead of the 2027 elections.
