Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has declared his intention to run for president in 2027 under a joint platform of the Allied Peoples Movement and the Peoples Democratic Party.

Makinde made the announcement on Thursday at a mega rally held at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, where both parties formally unveiled their alliance in Oyo State.

Speaking to a crowd drawn from Oyo, Ondo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, and Lagos states, the governor said Nigeria needed a multiparty system to thrive. He criticized what he described as poor leadership under President Bola Tinubu, saying the country had experienced setbacks in the economy, and in social and political life.

“Nigeria is too large for any individual or group to turn it into a one-party state,” Makinde said. “Democracy remains the foundation of every sane society.”

The rally also featured the unveiling of APM candidates for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and state assembly seats. The alliance was formalized through an agreement between APM leaders and a faction of the PDP led by Taminu Turaki.

The event marks the first public step in Makinde’s expected presidential campaign ahead of the 2027 general election.
