Maiduguri flood: NEDC asesses destruction, promises victims succour

The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) has started the assessment of the level of destruction caused by floods that ravaged parts of Maiduguri and environs in order to make decisions on area of intervention.

The Managing Director of the commission, Mr Mohammed Alkali, said Wednesday during a briefing in Maiduguri.

Alkali, while sympathising with the victims, pledged to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to cushion the effect of the flood disaster.

He said: ”This is unfortunate incidence, and I will advise that those living in the flood prone areas exercise extreme caution and avoid those areas for their safety.”

He disclosed that the commission would be in the interim liase with the state government and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to support the victims.

He also NEDC provided relief materials to the victims pending completion of an ongoing investigation into the causes of the flood incidence.
