Luth CMD represents Tinubu at inauguration 79 locally assembled ambulances for tertiary hospitals nationwide

Chief Medical Director of Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Professor Wasiu Lanre Adeyemo, on Monday represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to commission 79 advanced ambulances for tertiary hospitals across Nigeria.

The event, held in Lagos to mark the third anniversary of the Tinubu administration, is part of efforts to deliver on the Renewed Hope Agenda through improved emergency medical response.

—Locally assembled, dual-fuel units—

Adeyemo said the ambulances, facilitated by the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System under the Federal Ministry of Health, were 100% assembled in Nigeria with locally installed emergency equipment. He described it as proof of Nigeria’s growing capacity in healthcare technology and automobile engineering.

The vehicles are Advanced Life Support units with modern medical and communication systems that alert receiving hospitals before patient arrival. They run on both petrol and Compressed Natural Gas, in line with the administration’s energy diversification policy.

—Stronger emergency care network—

According to the LUTH CMD, the deployment will boost tertiary hospitals’ ability to respond faster to emergencies, improve patient transport and referral linkages, and reduce avoidable deaths.

He credited the initiative to Health Minister Professor Muhammad Ali Pate’s push for stronger infrastructure, better emergency systems, and progress toward Universal Health Coverage.

“These ambulances are a testament to Nigeria’s ability to produce world-class emergency response vehicles locally. Beyond improving emergency care, this will stimulate local manufacturing, create jobs, and build confidence in indigenous capacity,” Adeyemo said.

He urged states, LGAs, and private providers to tap into the proven local production capacity for future ambulance needs, adding that efficient emergency transport is as critical as hospital infrastructure for saving lives.

The 79 ambulances will be distributed to tertiary healthcare institutions nationwide to strengthen emergency response systems and reduce morbidity and mortality.
