The Lagos Mainland Local Government Council said it had taken a remarkable initiative to address some of the pressing healthcare needs of its most vulnerable residents by providing free health mission.

Its Executive Chairman, Mr Jubril Emilagba, said it was part of his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery and promoting the wellbeing of residents.

He spoke as the council held its 10th Edition of the Lagos Mainland Free Health Mission on Saturday.

The chairman said the council understood the challenges faced by low-income families, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities, who struggled to obtain necessary medical care, hence the initiative.

The chairman explained further that the health education and promotion for residents included free eye screening, surgery and glasses, malaria screening.

“Others are tuberculosis and HIV Screening; medical consultation and treatment; provision of essential drugs and family planning services, ‘’.

Emilagba said the initiative would ensure every resident, regardless of their socio-economic status, received effective medical attention by the medical personnel.

“In the health sector, we have recorded meaningful achievements with a strong emphasis on accessible healthcare.

“Our free medical outreach programmes have provided hernia surgeries, cataract tests, eye care services, and distribution of free eyeglasses.

“We also renovated and commissioned the Simpson Healthcare Centre in partnership with APM Terminals, and improved facilities at Desalu Primary Health Centre, Progressive Estate.

“By offering this vital support, the local government aims, not only to alleviate the financial burden associated with medical care, but also to promote overall community health and well-being,” he said.

Emilagba said his administration remained committed to reducing the pangs of hunger through the ‘’Ounje Emi Food Palliative Programme’’, conducted in more than eight phases across the communities.

According to him, the programme provides staple food items for both Christians and Muslims during the just concluded Ramadan and Lenten season.

“We believe that every act of support counts, and we will continue to stand by our people,” he said.
