Killing of soldiers: Troops neutralize criminal gang in Rivers State

Troops from the 5 Battalion, Nigerian Army, successfully neutralized members of a notorious criminal gang at Kalaogbokolo in Ahoada West Local Government Area (LGA), Rivers State.

In a statement, Acting Deputy Director of 6 Division Army Public Relations Lieut. Col. Danjuma Jonah Danjuma said this gang was responsible for the brutal killing of four soldiers and the abduction of two Korean expatriates, employees of Daewoo Company, on December 12, 2023.

He said the operation was launched after receiving credible intelligence indicating the gang’s return to the community.

Danjuma said the troops carried out a comprehensive cordon and search mission, which led to significant discoveries.

Among the recovered items were one AK-47 rifle, a Fabrique Nationale rifle, a pump-action gun, two locally made rifles, three AK-47 magazines, one FN magazine, three rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition, and 13 rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition.

He sai that during the operation, two gang members were apprehended. However, while the troops were securing the area and searching for additional evidence, the suspects attempted to escape into the dense surrounding bush.

In response, the soldiers pursued them and, after a lengthy chase, neutralized the fleeing criminals.

Danjuma expressed the Army’s resolve to ensure that perpetrators of such heinous crimes face the full weight of the law.

He emphasized the Army’s commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region, reassuring the public that no matter how long it takes, criminals involved in these acts will be held accountable.

He also reiterated its call for the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities or individuals to the appropriate security agencies.

The cooperation between the public and security forces is seen as vital in the ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and ensure the safety of lives and property in the region.
