A registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, who was kidnapped over ten months ago, has been finally released by her abductors.

Dr. Popoola was kidnapped on December 27, 2023, along with her husband, a Nigerian Air Force officer, Squadron Leader Nurudeen Popoola, and her nephew, Folaranmi Abdul-Mugniy.

Her husband, Squadron Leader Popoola, was, however, released in March.

His release had enabled negotiations to continue for her and her nephew’s release.

The situation became tense at some points, forcing members of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to hold multiple protests during which they called on the federal government to secure her release.

NARD President, Dr Tope Osundara, confirmed her release on Wednesday, October 30, 2024.

However, the security agencies and the government had yet to confirm her release as of press time.
