A behavioural and child care professional, Kemi Olokode-Ayelabola, has commended the Nigerian Senate, led by Senator Godswill Akpabio, for passing a bill that prescribes life imprisonment for anyone convicted of sexually defiling minors.
This move demonstrates the Senate’s commitment to creating a safe environment for children and combating the rising tide of child sexual abuse in Nigeria.
The bill, if signed into law, will replace existing provisions in Nigeria’s Criminal Code and Penal Code that prescribe lighter sentences for offenders.
Olokode-Ayelabola praised the Senators for prioritising the protection of vulnerable groups and promoting acceptable behavioural patterns that can make the environment safer and healthier for Nigerians.
As a child care professional based in Ireland, Olokode-Ayelabola expressed her excitement over the Senate’s decision, stating that it would help stem the rising cases of child sexual abuse across the country.
