The duo was arraigned by the Kano Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on separate one-count charges bordering on the abuse of Naira notes, in violation of Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007.
According to the EFCC, Abubakar Ibrahim was found guilty of spraying and trampling on ₦14,000 worth of ₦1,000 notes while dancing at a shop in Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State in November 2024.
Similarly, Hamisu Sa’id was accused of spraying ₦30,000 in ₦200 denominations during a social event in Hadejia, Jigawa State, within the same period.
Both defendants pleaded guilty to the charges when read before the court.
Following their pleas and the presentation of evidence by EFCC counsel, Zarami Mohammed, Justice Shuaibu convicted and sentenced each of them to five months imprisonment, with an option of a ₦200,000 fine.
The convictions followed their arrest after they were caught on video spraying naira notes—an act criminalised under Nigerian law.
