Kano Court ruling sparks outrage: NBA condemns order, forcing TikTok creators to marry

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has vehemently condemned a recent ruling by a Magistrate Court in Kano, which ordered two popular TikTok content creators, Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda, to formalise their relationship through marriage within 60 days.

The NBA described the development as a “grave misunderstanding of judicial authority” and a clear violation of the individuals’ fundamental rights.

In a statement signed by NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, the association emphasised that no court in Nigeria has the constitutional power to compel two individuals to marry.

“Marriage, by its very nature, is a voluntary union between consenting adults,” Osigwe said.

According to him, “It cannot, under any circumstance, be imposed as a form of punishment, moral correction, or judicial remedy.”

The NBA has called for an immediate review of the decision by Magistrate Halima Wali and urged judicial authorities to take steps to prevent similar unconstitutional orders in the future.

The association has also directed its Citizens’ Liberties Committee and Women’s Forum to monitor the situation, ensuring that the rule of law prevails.

This ruling has sparked widespread concern about judicial overreach and the protection of individual rights in Nigeria.

The NBA’s swift response underscores the importance of upholding constitutional rights and preventing the misuse of judicial power.
