The Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN) has called for peaceful coexistence between farmers and pastoralists across the country as preparations begin for the 2026 farming season, warning against actions capable of triggering renewed conflicts in rural communities.
In a communiqué issued after its 7th anniversary celebration and National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Damaturu, Yobe State, the association advised farmers against blocking cattle routes, encroaching on grazing reserves, or converting designated grazing areas into farmlands.
At the same time, the association urged pastoralists to avoid destruction of farmlands during livestock movement, stressing that disputes between farmers and herders should be resolved through dialogue, negotiation, and engagement with traditional rulers rather than violence or extrajudicial measures.
The communiqué, signed by KACRAN National President, Hon. Khalil Bello, followed a solidarity rally for peace and unity held at the Cultural Centre, Damaturu, on April 14, 2026, and a subsequent NEC meeting on April 15.
KACRAN emphasized that both farmers and herders have critical roles in Nigeria’s food system and should therefore conduct their activities in a lawful and peaceful manner.
The association also addressed the recurring issue of compensation for crop destruction caused by livestock, urging fairness and moderation in the assessment of damages.
According to KACRAN, compensation should reflect the actual value of crops destroyed, while expressing concern over what it described as excessive demands in some communities.
“We note with concern reports of excessive demands, such as ₦1,000,000 for a single cow entering a farm, and urge reasonableness and fairness in such matters,” the communiqué stated.
As part of efforts to boost political participation among pastoral communities, the association announced plans to embark on a nationwide house-to-house sensitization campaign to encourage pastoralists to participate in the ongoing electronic voter registration exercise ahead of the 2026 elections.
KACRAN further commended the Federal Government for initiatives in the livestock sector, particularly the establishment of the Presidential Livestock Reform Committee under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and co-chaired by Attahiru Jega, as well as the creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development headed by Hon. Dahiru Idi Maiha.
The association also praised state governments that have established ministries dedicated to livestock development, urging others yet to do so to follow suit in the interest of food security and improved nutrition.
Special commendation was extended to the North East Development Commission (NEDC) for its interventions in livestock development across the North East, as well as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for supporting modernization in agriculture, fisheries, and livestock production.

KACRAN equally applauded the L-PRES Project for converting motorized boreholes to solar-powered systems and constructing new solar boreholes in Yobe State, describing the initiative as critical to addressing water scarcity among pastoralists.
On insecurity and grazing infrastructure, the association appealed to both federal and state governments to reclaim and revive grazing reserves and cattle routes across the country, arguing that such measures would reduce long-distance cattle migration and minimize clashes arising from farm destruction.
The group warned that insecurity in parts of the North West and North Central continued to threaten farming and livestock activities, calling on government authorities to intensify efforts to protect lives and property.
According to KACRAN, improved security remains essential to increasing food production for both domestic consumption and export.
The association also renewed its call for the Federal Government to consider what it described as its proposed roadmap for ending insecurity, expressing confidence that lasting peace could be achieved within a few months if the recommendations are sincerely implemented.
