Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been elected the PDP governorship candidate in Imo scheduled for November 11.

Anyanwu emerged as the governorship candidate at the party’s primary election held on Wednesday in its state secretariat on Okigwe Road in Owerri, Imo State capital.

PDP Imo organising secretary, Lawrence Biado, said the seven-man electoral panel constituted by the National Working Committee headed by Kenneth Okon monitored the primary election in Imo.

Ex-governor of the state, Emeka Ihedioha, had weeks ago pulled out from the PDP governorship race. He was absent at the primary on Wednesday.

In January 2020, the Supreme Court sacked Ihedioha as the governor of Imo State after barely seven months in office.

Anyanwu is expected to challenge the incumbent governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for the seat.

Off-cycle governorship elections are expected to hold in Bayelsa, Kogi and Imo states on November 11, 2023.
