Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Ghanaians to uphold peace and the rule of law as they prepare to head to the polls for the country’s general elections on December 7, 2024.
Jonathan is in Accra leading the West African Elders’ Forum (WAEF) Electoral Mission, a body committed to promoting peaceful and credible elections across the region.
Since his arrival in Accra on Wednesday, Jonathan and his team have engaged in consultations with key stakeholders, including the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, members of the National Election Security Task-Force, and officials of the Electoral Commission of Ghana. These meetings, he stated, are part of efforts to ensure a smooth and secure electoral process.
In a post on his social media page, Jonathan emphasized the significance of peaceful elections, noting that Ghana’s consistent adherence to democratic principles has solidified its reputation as a model of democracy in West Africa. “As Ghanaians get ready to vote on Saturday, I encourage them to be peaceful and law-abiding in order to reinforce the nation’s position as a beacon of democracy in the sub-region,” he said.
The upcoming elections, which will determine the next president and parliamentary representatives, are being closely watched both locally and internationally. Security agencies and election management bodies have pledged their readiness to ensure a credible process.
Jonathan’s involvement reflects WAEF’s commitment to fostering stability and democratic governance across the region, particularly in times of political transition. His call for peace resonates with ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and avoid electoral violence in West Africa.
Observers and analysts hope the elections will further cement Ghana’s status as a leader in democratic practices and peaceful transitions of power on the continent.
