Jonathan meets with interest groups in Mali

Former President of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, on Wednesday, met with various interest groups, including political, religious and civil society leaders in Bamako, Mali.

Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) appointed Jonathan as a special envoy to lead the sub-regional body’s mediation mission in Mali.

The former Nigeria leader expressed optimism that the mission will yield positive results

“Since I arrived Bamako Wednesday evening with my delegation to begin my assignment as leader of Ecowas Cedeao peace mission to Mali.

“I have been meeting with various interest groups including political, religious and civil society leaders.

“I am optimistic that our mission will yield positive results as our message of hope, peace and progress has so far been well received by different stakeholders,”Jonathan said.

Mali has been in the throes of protests by citizens, actions that were caused by the outcome of  the parliamentary elections in March and April, this year.

There has been a perceived discontent over the government’s handling of Mali’s jihadist insurgency and worsening economic situation.
