Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, leading the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM), reported an orderly and early start to voting across Botswana as the country held its 13th general election on October 30, 2024.
Jonathan, alongside fellow AU observers, visited multiple polling stations across Gaborone, the nation’s capital, to assess the conduct and transparency of the voting process.
The mission’s visit aligns with the African Union’s commitment to promoting democratic governance and stability across the continent.
The AUEOM team is tasked with monitoring the electoral process, ensuring it adheres to Botswana’s laws, and assessing whether it meets regional and international standards for democratic elections.
Botswana has long been regarded as a stable democracy in Africa, with a history of peaceful transitions of power since its independence from Britain in 1965.
Jonathan and other members of the observation mission commended the Batswana for their active engagement in the electoral process and expressed optimism for a fair outcome.
“We extend our best wishes to the people of Botswana as they seek to further consolidate their vibrant democracy,” Jonathan stated.
The AU observation team is expected to issue a preliminary report in the coming days, with a final assessment after the election results are announced.
In the meantime, Jonathan praised the professionalism displayed by electoral officials and security personnel, underscoring their role in maintaining order and facilitating voter access at polling stations.
Observers are paying close attention to voter turnout, logistical efficiency, and the security of the voting process.
They will also review the transparency of vote-counting procedures, as Botswana continues its commitment to open democratic practices.
The AU hopes that Botswana’s election will serve as a positive example for other countries in the region, reinforcing democratic ideals on the continent.
