Former Communications Minister Isa Ali Pantami has rejected the APC’s consensus arrangement for Gombe elective positions, calling it a “coronation” that “lacks inclusivity and contravenes the law.”

Pantami, a governorship hopeful, made his stand known Sunday in a statement issued by Professor Suleiman Mohammed for his supporters and the Pantamiyya Movement.

The ex-minister argues the consensus shuts out qualified aspirants and violates APC guidelines and the Electoral Act.

“What we have is a coronation, not consensus,” the statement said, adding, “It lacks inclusivity and contravenes the law.”

Pantami is demanding a “transparent, competitive and lawful” process, signalling he won’t step down for an anointed candidate.

The state APC, led by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has been pushing a consensus slate to avoid a bruising primary ahead of 2027. Party sources say the move is meant to “manage post-Yahaya succession” and keep the party united.

Under the reported arrangement:

– Governorship: Zoned to Gombe Central, with Finance Commissioner Muhammad Magaji and former Reps member Abubakar Yunusa Ahmad seen as frontrunners.

– Gombe North Senate: Incumbent Senator Sa’idu Alkali favoured to return unopposed.

– Gombe South Senate: Consensus reportedly tilts to former Senator Joshua Lidani.

Pantami, from Gombe Central, is the most high-profile aspirant affected. His rejection blows open a contest party leaders hoped to avoid.

Other aspirants caught in the crossfire:

1. Dr. Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna — Ex-MD of Kano Electricity Distribution Company. Also from Gombe Central. Has been touring LGAs despite the consensus talk.

2. Air Vice Marshal Shehu Adamu (retd) — From Gombe South. Seen as a dark horse with military backing.

3. Hon. Khamisu Ahmed Mailantarki — NNPP’s 2023 guber candidate. Recently returned to APC. Consensus would block his comeback bid.

-What’s next-

The Gombe APC has not responded to Pantami’s statement as of press time.

Party insiders say the State Working Committee meets this week to “review complaints” from aggrieved aspirants.

Section 84(9) of the Electoral Act 2022 allows consensus but requires written consent from all cleared aspirants.

Pantami’s team says that condition hasn’t been met.

If the party insists, Pantami could head to court or defect — fueling 2027 realignment talks.

He retains a strong base through the Pantamiyya Movement and clerical networks in the North-East.
