The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have commended the Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association (NAOWA) for its humanitarian impact on widows, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), the less privileged and orphans across the country.
The chairman of the commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu gave the commendation when members of NAOWA led by its president, Mrs Salamatu Yahaya paid him a courtesy visit at the INEC Headquarters, Abuja.
Professor Yakubu, who was represented by the Chairman Outreach and Partnership Committee (National Commissioner), Dr Adekunle Ogunmola, extolled the humanitarian gestures of NAOWA which is centred on improving the standard of living and capacity building of women, youth and children in the barracks.
He assured NAOWA of the commission’s support towards ensuring that IDPs whom NAOWA reached out to recently, are given equal rights during elections.
He stated that though the commission does not give relief materials to them, they will not be left out in the electoral processes, by ensuring that whatever other members of the society enjoy as fundamental right to vote, are also accorded to them and would be ready to support NAOWA when needed.
In her remarks, NAOWA president, stated that NAOWA is a nonprofit and non-governmental organisation with objectives of assisting the poor, needy and raising the standard of living within the barracks of the nation.
She emphasised that the association which relies on donations and goodwill, has positively impacted on so many lives and communities through provision of water, skill acquisitions, schools and business centers both within and outside the barrack communities.
This she added has contributed in empowering women, youths, widows and the less privileged, thereby contributing to the nation’s manpower development.
Mrs Yahaya expressed gratitude to the chairman and the entire staff of the commission for the remarkable impact on her, especially in terms of administrative capabilities and human resources management skills over the years of service with the commission.
She added that the chairman’s leadership style and skills in particular have made positive impacts and worthy of emulation, as she promised to be a good ambassador of the commission.
