Igwe aspirant dies after alleged Police assault in Anambra
An 80-year-old Igwe aspirant, Paul Onwualu, has died in Anambra State after allegedly being beaten during an arrest in Nkpor, Idemili North LGA.
According to family sources, policemen said to be from the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja, accompanied by political opponents, stormed Onwualu’s Umusiome Nkpor home last Thursday to arrest him over an ongoing Igweship dispute.
A source said he was beaten, bundled into a police vehicle, and taken toward Ogidi Police Station. He collapsed on the way and was rushed to Iyi-Enu Mission Hospital Ogidi, where he was confirmed dead.
His wife, Anthonia Onwualu, said the men scaled the compound fence before assaulting her husband and taking him away. “I was later told he died midway to the station,” she said.
The Igweship tussle is already before an Ogidi High Court in Suit No. HID/72/2026.
