IGP reaffirms police readiness to tackle cybercrime as 113 foreign nationals are arraigned

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment and capability to combat cybercrime and safeguard Nigeria’s cyberspace from local and international threats.

According to Force Public Relations Officer Force Headquarters, Abuja ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, this statement follows the successful arrest and arraignment of 113 foreign nationals involved in a sophisticated cybercrime syndicate.

The operation, conducted by officers of Zone 7 Command and the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC), led to the apprehension of the suspects on November 3, 2024, in Jahi, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

During the raid, a wide range of digital evidence and assets suspected to have been used in illegal activities was recovered, include, Vehicles: 1 black Toyota Tundra, Laptops, smartphones, tablets, desktop computers, routers, game consoles, and drones.

Others are High-capacity servers and multiple SIM cards from both local and international providers, Personal Documents: International passports, identity cards, and travel documents.

Adejobi said following an extensive investigation, the suspects have been arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The charges include Computer-related fraud, unlawful access to data, marketing scams, money laundering, conspiracy, and illegal immigration.

He said investigations also revealed links to human trafficking networks, highlighting the transnational nature of their criminal activities.

The Nigeria Police Force is collaborating with international law enforcement agencies and embassies to ensure that cybercriminals operating across borders are tracked, prosecuted, and held accountable under Nigerian law.

IGP Egbetokun emphasized the Force’s dedication to leveraging advanced technology in protecting citizens both physically and digitally. He assured the public that the Police are well-equipped and prepared to address emerging cyber threats and transnational crimes.

The force further reiterated its commitment to maintaining a secure cyberspace and ensuring that perpetrators of cybercrime face justice.
