The Inspector-General of Police [IGP] Kayode Egbetokun has ordered an immediate investigation into the allegations raised in a viral video by a retired Superintendent of Police regarding poor welfare and retirement benefits of police pensioners.

The directive, issued on Wednesday, mandates the NPF Pensions Limited to urgently scrutinise the claims, identify any lapses in the pension administration system, and take appropriate corrective measures.

In a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP emphasised that the Nigeria Police Force remained sensitive to the plight of its retired personnel.

He acknowledged the critical role pensioners had played in safeguarding the nation, stressing that their welfare remained a top priority.

“The IGP recognises that timely and adequate pension administration is crucial to sustaining morale and institutional integrity,” the statement read.

He said, “While efforts have consistently been made to improve the pension system, the IGP welcomes constructive feedback and sees it as a catalyst for necessary reforms.”

Reassuring both serving and retired personnel, IGP Egbetokun reiterated the Force’s commitment to building a system that honours the sacrifices of its officers.

He appealed to all stakeholders, especially retirees and their families, to remain calm and patient as the investigation progresses and engagement with relevant agencies continues.

The IGP’s response followed growing concerns on social media sparked by the viral video, which shed light on the challenges faced by retired police officers in accessing their entitlements.
