In a strategic move to reinforce operational integrity and enhance effective management within the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued a directive prohibiting officers from carrying assault rifles while dressed in civilian attire (mufti).

According to the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the directive was delivered during a virtual meeting held on February 10, 2025, with strategic police managers across the country.

The meeting addressed critical issues aimed at strengthening ethical standards and professional conduct within the Force.

The IGP issued a firm warning against human rights violations, emphasizing that the Nigeria Police Force remained committed to upholding and protecting these rights.

He acknowledged receiving numerous complaints through the Force’s official complaint channels and reiterated that any officer found guilty of human rights abuses would face severe disciplinary measures.

Furthermore, the IGP cautioned all tactical squads against the misuse of power and improper dressing, underscoring the necessity of adhering to approved uniforms and operational protocols.

He reaffirmed that no officer should be seen carrying assault rifles while in civilian attire, directing all tactical units to strictly comply with established standard operating procedures and uniform regulations.

Additionally, the IGP addressed the issue of the indiscriminate transfer of cases without his written approval, stressing that such practices would no longer be tolerated.

Unauthorized case transfers, he noted, placed undue burdens on affected parties and contributed to unnecessary delays in the dispensation of justice.

The IGP urged all officers to work collaboratively to uphold the integrity and reputation of the Force.

He reiterated the need for professionalism, accountability, and strict adherence to the principles that govern policing in Nigeria.
