Ife indigenes, traditionalists invade OAU over appointment of VC

Ife indigenes and traditionalists have allegedly invaded the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, in Osun State with charms to protest the failure by the authorities to appoint an Ife indigene as the Vice Chancellor of the University.

Abiodun Olanrewaju, the varsity’s Public Relations Officer who confirmed the report said the locals, indigenes, and traditionalists invaded the campus with several fetish objects.

On March 17, the university governing council, led by its chairman Owelle Oscar Udoji, had announced Adebayo Simeon Bamire, a professor of Agricultural Economics, as the 12th substantive VC of the varsity.

Residents of Ile Ife in Osun State earlier on Monday protested at the gate of the University over the appointment of a non-native of the town as the vice chancellor of the University.

The leader of the protesters, Bimbo Afolabi, had on Thursday said Ife community was displeased with the decision of the Governing Council of the university to appoint a non-native of Ife as VC despite their plea for an opportunity to produce VC for the first time in the history of the institution.

The protesters disrupted vehicular movements in and out of the campus during the protest.
