The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has secured the conviction of two National Assembly staff for defrauding job seekers in a scam involving alleged employment at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
The convicted individuals, Mustapha Mohammed, currently at large, and Tijjani Adam Goni, were found guilty of defrauding Saifudeen Yakub and Aminu Abubakar of a total of N4.8 million over promises of securing jobs at the two federal agencies.
According to the ICPC, the scam began on May 27, 2021, when Mustapha Mohammed, claiming connections within the National Assembly, promised the petitioners job slots at the CBN for N4 million each.
The petitioners were instructed to deposit N3 million into a Zenith Bank account belonging to Mohammed, with an additional N300,000 allegedly for medical screening transferred to an Access Bank account linked to Badraddin Mohammed.
Following investigations, the defendants were arraigned before Justice B.M. Bassi of the FCT High Court No.55 in Asokoro on multiple charges including advance fee fraud, conspiracy, and forgery.
The charges centered on forged employment letters dated June 2021, which were purportedly issued by the CBN and FIRS to extort money from the victims.
Under plea negotiations in accordance with Section 270 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015, the defendants admitted guilt to a lesser charge and agreed to refund the full N4.8 million to the ICPC Recovery Account.
Additionally, they pleaded guilty to making false statements under the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000, and were each fined N100,000.

Speaking on the conviction, the ICPC emphasized that the agency remains committed to cracking down on fraudulent practices and protecting Nigerians from corruption.
