Lieutenant General Jeremiah Timbut Useni (Retd) was laid to rest with full military honours in his hometown of Langtang, Plateau State, on February 22, 2025.
According to Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations 3 Division, Nigerian Army Lieut. Col. Aliyu Danja, the solemn ceremony brought together government officials, military personnel, and family members to honour the late general’s legacy of service to Nigeria as a soldier, statesman, and senator.
A church service at the COCIN Church Headquarters in Langtang preceded the burial, where Plateau State Governor Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang paid tribute to Useni’s dedication to national development and unity.
“He was more than a soldier; he was a national icon who devoted his life to service and humanity,” the governor remarked, likening Useni to other distinguished Plateau leaders, including Generals Bali, Dogonyaro, and Shagaya.

He further highlighted Useni’s commitment to reconciliation and peacebuilding in the state.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen OO Oluyede, represented by Major General EF Oyinlola, described Useni as a principled leader and patriot.
“He was a loving father, a dedicated husband, and an exceptional leader who left a lasting impact,” he said.
Useni’s tenure as military administrator of the former Bendel State was lauded for advancing infrastructure, education, and social development, as well as pioneering self-help projects that empowered local communities.
His contributions extended beyond the military.
As Minister of Transportation and later Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Useni championed policies that modernized Nigeria’s transport and aviation sectors.
As a senator from 2015 to 2019, he continued advocating for national development, leaving a legacy of transformative leadership.
The funeral concluded with a military oration, a 21-gun salute, and the sounding of the last post—an honour reserved for distinguished officers.
The ceremony was a solemn yet fitting tribute to a man whose life was defined by service, leadership, and dedication to Nigeria.
