African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has claimed that he saved former President Olusegun Obasanjo from an alleged plot to kill him with a lethal injection while both men were in prison during the military era.

Speaking in an interview with newsmen on Thursday, August 21, 2026, the former Vice President said he leaked information about the plan and personally warned Obasanjo not to allow any injection to be administered on him.

According to Atiku, a similar plot was carried out against the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua. He said when he learnt that Obasanjo was also being targeted, he alerted him.

“I saved Obasanjo’s life in prison by leaking information about an impending injection that could have killed him. They did the same to Yar’Adua, and when I learnt they planned to do it to him, I warned him not to allow the injection,” Atiku said.

The former Vice. President linked the revelation to his current rift with Obasanjo, saying the ex-president now wants the world to hate him because he opposed Obasanjo’s third-term agenda while in office.

“Today, he wants the world to hate me because I opposed his third-term ambition,” he added.

Atiku and Obasanjo served together between 1999 and 2007, but their relationship collapsed over the failed bid to amend the constitution to allow a third term for the president.
