United States President Joe Biden received his successor Donald Trump at the White House ahead of the latter’s inauguration on Monday, January 20, 2025.

Biden, alongside First Lady Jill Biden, welcomed Trump and his wife, Melania, at the White House and exchanged brief remarks before they walked inside the building.

Trump will be sworn in for his second term as U.S. president just before 12:00 EST (17:00 GMT) at the US Capitol, where crowds of supporters are gathering.

The ceremony is being held indoors, at the Capitol Rotunda, due to freezing temperatures in Washington D.C.

Trump has promised a barrage of executive orders on his first day in office, vowing to act with “historic speed and strength”.

Biden issued pre-emptive pardons to shield Trump foes from prosecution, including Covid-19 advisor Anthony Fauci and officers who testified over the January 6 Capitol riot, AFP reported.

Trump is expected to declare a national emergency at the border and sign a handful of border-related executive orders right after he takes office.

He will also declare a national energy emergency aimed at “unleashing affordable and reliable American energy”.
