The House of Representatives has refuted allegations that lawmakers are demanding bribes from Vice-Chancellors of federal universities to approve their 2025 budget allocations.

In a statement on Wednesday, House Spokesperson, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr. described the claims, published by Premium Times, as “baseless and sensational,” accusing the media outlet of failing to uphold balanced journalism.

The House emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability in the budget process, noting that all ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) were required to defend their allocations in open sessions.

Lawmakers expressed concerns that some university heads had failed to appear for budget defence sessions despite their legal obligation.

Additionally, the House pointed to unresolved audit queries and governance issues in certain universities, including allegations of financial mismanagement and abuse of office, as matters requiring legislative scrutiny.

The statement reaffirmed that any credible evidence of misconduct should be submitted to relevant authorities, including the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges or anti-corruption agencies.

It also warned that media sensationalism would not derail the House’s oversight responsibilities.
