Hon. Gideon Lucas Gwani: The Loyal Grassroots Statesman and Steadfast Voice of Southern Kaduna, By Emmah Uhieneh

In an era where political defections, shifting alliances and personal ambitions have become the defining character of many Nigerian politicians, one name that continues to stand out for consistency, loyalty and resilience is Gideon Lucas Gwani.

For over two decades in active politics, Gwani has remained one of the few politicians whose political journey has been defined not merely by positions held, but by enduring commitment to his people, his principles and his party. From the dawn of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic in 1999 till date, he has remained a faithful and unwavering member of the Peoples Democratic Party, refusing to abandon the platform even during turbulent political seasons when many politicians crossed carpets in search of convenience and survival.

Born on October 18, 1964, the seasoned architect-turned-politician carved a reputation for himself as a pragmatic leader with deep intellectual capacity, administrative understanding and an uncommon connection with the grassroots. Hailing from Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Gwani became one of the most recognizable political figures from Southern Kaduna, particularly through his long years of legislative representation and advocacy for justice, peace and development in the region.

Educated at Kaduna Capital School and the prestigious Barewa College, Gwani’s academic journey reflected discipline and ambition. His professional training in Architecture at Kaduna State Polytechnic, University of Jos and Ahmadu Bello University equipped him with the technical and intellectual foundation that later shaped his methodical approach to governance and public service.

Yet, beyond the certificates and political titles, Gideon Gwani’s greatest strength has remained his relationship with ordinary people. Across communities in Kaura Federal Constituency, he built a reputation as a politician who mingles freely with the grassroots, listens attentively to their concerns and identifies personally with their daily struggles. Unlike leaders who disconnect from the people after elections, Gwani cultivated an enduring presence among his constituents — attending community gatherings, identifying with traditional institutions, empowering youths and supporting vulnerable families within the limits of available resources.

To many in Southern Kaduna, Gwani represented more than a legislator; he became a dependable voice during difficult moments of insecurity and political uncertainty. At critical periods when communities in Southern Kaduna faced violent attacks and displacement, he consistently raised motions on the floor of the House of Representatives, demanding concrete federal intervention and improved security architecture for affected communities. His courage in speaking for his people earned him admiration across political and ethnic lines.

His political rise began in 1999 when he was elected into the Kaduna State House of Assembly, where he served meritoriously as Deputy Speaker until 2003. The confidence reposed in him at such an early stage of democratic governance reflected his leadership qualities, calm temperament and ability to build consensus.

In 2003, he was elected into the House of Representatives to represent Kaura Federal Constituency under the PDP platform. What followed was a remarkable legislative journey spanning two decades. Election after election, the people renewed their confidence in him, returning him to the National Assembly multiple times — a testament to his acceptability, accessibility and political relevance among the grassroots.

Within the Green Chamber, Gwani distinguished himself as an experienced parliamentarian with strong legislative competence. His emergence as Minority Whip in the 9th National Assembly further underscored the confidence his colleagues had in his leadership capacity and strategic political understanding.

As a lawmaker, he was not merely content with occupying a seat in parliament. He sponsored and supported critical legislations aimed at strengthening institutions and improving governance. The Environmental Health Council Bill and the Raw Materials Research and Development Council Bill were among notable legislative contributions associated with his tenure. His legislative interests in education, youth empowerment, urban development and local content further demonstrated his commitment to nation-building.

One defining attribute that continues to distinguish Gideon Gwani in Nigeria’s volatile political environment is loyalty. In a country where defections have become almost routine, Gwani remained rooted in the PDP from 1999 till date. Through victories, setbacks, changing political tides and internal party storms, he maintained steadfast allegiance to the party structure and ideals. Such consistency has earned him respect as a dependable party man whose convictions are not driven merely by political convenience.

As another general election gradually approaches, the people of Kaura Federal Constituency and Southern Kaduna are once again presented with an important opportunity — an opportunity to reflect deeply, know better and choose wisely between tested loyalty and political opportunism. For many supporters of Gwani, the choice remains between a steadfast, faithful and accessible politician who has remained with his people through thick and thin, and politicians who wander from one political platform to another in search of convenience, relevance or personal advantage.

To his admirers, Gideon Gwani represents stability, consistency and commitment — a politician who stayed when it was difficult, who remained loyal when others defected, and who continued identifying with the hopes and struggles of his people regardless of political circumstances. They argue that leadership is not merely about occupying office, but about trust, sacrifice, consistency and standing firmly with the people in both favourable and difficult times.

Even after narrowly losing the 2023 House of Representatives election, Gwani’s political relevance did not diminish. Rather, many observers saw in him the character of a resilient democrat who accepted the realities of political contest while continuing to remain active within the political space. His calm disposition after the election reinforced his image as a mature statesman committed to democratic processes.

For many of his supporters, Gideon Gwani remains a symbol of stability, experience and grassroots politics. They see in him a leader with the capacity to continue representing the interests of his peace-loving people with dignity, courage and sincerity. His political journey reflects endurance, accessibility and unwavering commitment to service.

In the wider context of Kaduna State politics and Southern Kaduna’s evolving democratic aspirations, Gwani’s legacy remains firmly etched as that of a resourceful politician, an experienced legislator, a loyal party stalwart and a grassroots-oriented leader whose connection with the people has remained his greatest political capital.
