History made: 18-year-old American named World’s youngest professor, shatters 306-year record

Nathan Thomas has rewritten the record books.

 

At 18 years and 346 days old, the American prodigy has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the youngest professor in history, ending a 306-year record that stood since 1717.

 

—Breaking A Three-Century Record—

 

According to GWR, Thomas achieved the milestone in August 2023 when he returned to

Miami Dade College as a lecturer for COP 2270: C for Engineers.

 

He broke the long-standing record held by Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin, who became a professor at the University of Aberdeen at age 19 in 1717.

 

Thomas is also 16 days younger than Alia Sabur, who became the world’s youngest female professor at 18 years and 362 days in 2008.

 

—A Journey That Started At Age 10—

 

Thomas’s academic path has been anything but ordinary.

 

He enrolled at Miami Dade College at age 10, then transferred to

Florida International University at 14.

 

By 18, he had already earned both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, with honours.

 

Despite teaching students mostly his own age, Thomas commanded the classroom with confidence, teaching computing and programming courses he had mastered years earlier.

 

“Once you’re in that setting, everyone’s there for the same reason, which is to learn,” Thomas told GWR. “Age doesn’t really factor into that. I just focus on trying to do my job well and helping students in whatever way I can.”

 

—From STEM To Law: The Mind Of A Polymath—

 

Thomas credits his love for mathematics and his family background for his early drive. He grew up in a household of engineers.

 

“(My mom) had a way of making things feel simple even when they weren’t, and I think some of that stuck with me more than I realized at the time,” he said.

 

For him, the greatest reward of teaching is watching students have breakthrough moments.

“Teaching something forces you to understand it on a whole other level – so I end up learning just as much from it as the students do, if not more.”

 

He hasn’t slowed down. Thomas is currently pursuing a Juris Doctor degree at the University of Miami School of Law and also teaches online courses. He expects to complete law school in 2028 and plans to specialize in intellectual property law with a focus on STEM.

 

“Engineering taught me how to break down complex problems in a structured way, and that’s carried over into how I approach law school now,” he said.

 

—Beyond The Classroom—

 

Away from lectures and textbooks, Thomas lives an active life. He plays basketball, tennis and golf, supports the Boston Celtics and New England Patriots, plays classical piano, and unwinds to Drake, EDM and house music.

 

On fame and pressure, the 18-year-old professor offered a measured perspective: “Everyone’s path looks different, even if the goal looks similar from the outside. It’s easy to fall into comparing your timeline to someone else’s, but really all that does is slow you down. The results might not show up right away, but I truly believe they come with time if you keep showing up and putting in the work.”

 

With one record already broken and a law degree still ahead, Nathan Thomas is proving that age is no barrier to impact.
